For Immediate Release – February 17, 2005 It is our greatest honor and pleasure to find AQM Pellets being used at The 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. GreenTech, Integrated Turf Management (ITM) was responsible for providing the Olympic Stadium pitch in time for the track and field events in Athens 2004. This company builds mature fields at remote sites, in this case near the Athens Airport, while the stadium floor is prepared. GreenTech specified what grass they preferred to use, Bermuda 419 grass, but there were no Bermuda 419 grass fields in Greece. Similar to the USA, Greece is in a transitional zone so with the hot summers they were able to use Bermuda grass and then overseed for the winter with rye grasses. However just looking at their climatic records, they could not believe that there were little or no Bermuda fields being cultivated. The turf farms mostly had tall fescues and rye. With temperatures around 40 C degrees during the summer months, even the tall fescue fields were struggling. The main contractor decided to use a local turf company, Hellasod (Which translates as Greek turf) who is the main turf contractor in Greece. They gave them the contract to build the field and supply all the materials, rootzone, gravel and turf. For the system to work in the time scale, it had to be washed. Hellasod did not know what that meant, so they had to teach them new techniques about washing turf. There were no turf washing machines in Greece. So the head of their company decided to make their own bespoke washing machine. It proved to be well-engineered. “AQM was used at the construction site during the grow in of the washed 416 Bermuda Turf. It was a hostile environment with high temperatures and severe winds. AQM was used through the hand applicator guns at night. The whole field was covered a number of times which brought the field round during the grow in. We only had 8 weeks to grow the field in before we had to move it, in which time we had 35cm of root depth and a great turf sward. I enclose a couple of pictures showing the rooting after 7 weeks,” stated Simon Jacob, Project Director from GreenTech. Thus, temperatures being what they were with severe winds, the grass was vulnerable. But the 2004 Summer Olympics were just around the corner and parts of the Olympic grass were stressed and yellow. So GreenTech contacted our distributors, Tower Chemical for an emergency supply of AQM. The pellets arrived and so did The Olympics.
